Tallybeck Contemporary is a gallery focused on showcasing the most exciting Asian fine artists in the world. So for their booth at the LA Art Show they had a big group exhibit, featuring artists like the Island6 collective from Shanghai and Be Takerng Pattanopas from Thailand. Island6 creates pieces that utilize LEDs to make looping videos, Pattanopas uses ink to create controlled splashes, and a third artist named Laurens Tan even had a sculpture/video combo installation. *NOTE: The sculpture above is “Jin and Jin” by Laurens Tan.

SM Fine Art Gallery featured two famous Korean artists in its booth at the LA Art Show, both of whom work with fine details. Chun Kwang Young wraps paper around triangular pieces of styrofoam to create huge textural collages whereas Kim Dong Yoo paints tiny portraits of celebrities to form one massive portrait of a different, but related, celebrity. For example, his portrait of Michael Jackson was made up of a bunch of portraits of Madonna – all with varying degrees of paint density. And the two icons relate because Michael is the king of pop and Madonna is its queen. The actual gallery is located in Irvine and has a pretty impressive collection of work by Chagall, Koons, and Picasso in addition to the work already mentioned.

Shanghai Spring Salon Gallery had an eclectic mix of paintings, prints, and sculptures in its booth at the LA Art Fair. One of the most bizarre of which was a piece by Xiao Min made out of wire mesh featuring a couple having sex. Now normally a piece like that wouldn’t be so strange in today’s world, except for the fact that in this particular sculpture you can actually see full on insertion through the mesh. And at $49,000 – that’s a pretty expensive piece of hardcore friction. However, it is definitely a conversation starter. *NOTE: The sculpture above is ”Secret Room 3″ by Xiao Min.

Emil Kazaz’s figurative sculptures of biblical and ancient characters felt alive in Morradian Gallery’s booth at the LA Art Show. And Emil’s version of Adam and Eve [see above] was especially great because of how Adam is holding fruit from the tree of knowledge with curiosity and Eve is just looking at him like c’mon and eat it already. His work had attitude and was rather large, since even the smallest piece was probably at least 4 feet tall. Emil Kazaz has mastered the art of taking classical techniques and blending them with our cartoon influences of today. *NOTE: All sculptures by Emil Kazaz.

Instead of traditional paintings and sculptures, Chung Jark Gallery had some different kinds of pieces at their booth in the LA Art Show. The most fascinating of which was a set of sculptures by Yung Hee Jo where the the actual figure was all distorted in terms of shape, but when seen through a warped mirror appeared to be in perfect proportion. The object in front of the mirror would also rotate in a circle so you could see you at every angle. Bates Wilson was one of the only artists to have a solo exhibit inside the LA Art Show. And his metallic sculptures of steam punk fish caught everyone by happy surprise. They are massive, about 10 feet tall, and hang from hooks in the ceiling – so there were only about 3 or 4 of them that were able to fit in the space. However, the fact that he could make such an impact with only 4 pieces, whereas everyone else had 20+ is something to be noted!

The Art of Elysium is an organization that brings professional artists to hospitals to work with children who have serious medical conditions. This year they were honored as the beneficiary of the LA Art Show and had a big display in the center of the grounds featuring the work of Mark Mothersbaugh. And in addition to his symmetrically designed old photographs, he also had two symmetrically shaped cars that were probably the most talked about work of the whole fair because of how cool they were!

Seungchun Lim is a Korean artist who’s created a narrative using a series of sculptures that are on display at Andrew Bae Gallery’s booth in the LA Art Show. The story is about a boy that’s born with three eyes and a hump in his back. Eventually, it’s revealed that the hump is hiding a set of wings, which are unfortunately eaten by a fish as he travels around the world in a giant boat. But, you’ll have to check out his book “The Endless Story” to really know the full extent of the adventure. In the meantime, here are some pictures of the pieces to build a narrative of your own.

The Toy Art Gallery, also known as TAG, had what I felt like was the most exciting and fresh of all the exhibits at the Affordable Art Fair in Los Angeles. They have a variety of sculptures on display at their booth made up of everything from bronze to plaster to vinyl to ceramic. And when I met the founder of the gallery, Gino Joukar, I found out that the artists they represent are from all over the world – which was really exciting to learn about. For example, Arkiv is from Indonesia, Molfetta is from Italy, and Emilio Garcia is from Spain. Every piece on display was of supreme quality and I definitely wanted to buy them all. *NOTE: The sculpture in the center of the image above is “Mozart” by Gomez Bueno.
