ART PLATFORM Los Angeles – David Abir
David Abir, in partnership with Cottelston Advisors, created a wonderful installation at the cafe inside ART PLATFORM, entitled Ruin: Tekrar Level Four. It’s truly a magical experience to walk into the installation, since somehow it defies the physics of the room; making you think you’re in a rather large space that’s actually quite small in reality. When you enter the work through a small crooked doorway you traverse a twisting maze echoing with droning tones until you get to the end where there is an overpowering orange painting that appears to pulsate and glow. It’s the type of artistic experience that makes one start to think about religion and the presence of a higher life form, at least it did for me.
This is a view of the installation from one of the backsides of the piece

[...] On the second floor of the building where Art Platform was taking place was a large sculpture of a snake made entirely out of backpacks by Ai Weiwei. To balance out the room, Kim Schoenstadt painted a wonderful abstract city scape which incorporated optical illusions to make it seem three-dimension. If you took the elevator downstairs to where Co/Lab was taking place, there was an installation by Paul Guillemette of a set of wooden stairs that messed with my perception of space for a moment. When I first walked by them I thought they were the stairs to get back up the plaza level of the building and nearly slammed my head into the wall. Then of course there was David Abir’s amazing installation entitled Tekrar: Level 4, which I wrote an entire article about that you can view here: http://argotandochre.com/2011/10/art-platform-los-angeles-david-abir/ [...]
