I was walking back from dinner and saw a crowd gathered outside of FAMILY – the rad zine shop on Fairfax. A waist-hight chalkboard revealed why everyone was fogging up the glass door “Ed and Deanna Templeton signing and lecture tonight.” So I made my way through the packed interior to my own little bubble of space where I could hear them talking and see their black and white pics of young girls with scribbles drawn all over them. The couple was very soft-spoken as they went from pic to pic talking about the sadness they felt over the girls getting profane things written on them – a lot of which were taken at the 2011 US Open of Surfing, which we covered HERE. At one point Ed pointed out that they had to look up what DTF [Down To Fuck] meant, since they saw it written on so many young girl’s backs, to which Deanna replied “It’s probably a good thing we don’t know the language of Jersey Shore.” One of the most interesting themes they mentioned was how each year they take these photos the girls get more lax about what they’re willing to have sharpied onto them, especially since there were multiple girls who were blatantly underage with things written on them like ‘Gives Head, No Teeth’. When the talk was over Ed and Deanna signed copies of their various books and I noticed that there was a dude wearing a shirt with himself on it – too rad!
