The Supervillains – Interview
Summer is here and it’s time to put together your mix-tape for the beach. The Supervillains, make ska-rock-reggae and have a fan base that ranges from skaters to Dennis Rodman. In the following interview with Skart, the band’s guitarist, you’ll learn about the greatest basketball moment of 1992 and the joys of working at a serpentarium.
Daniel Rolnik: Your merch is really cool, who design all of it?
Skart: Our bassist Dan does a good amount of the band’s artwork (posters, album art, logos) but a lot of our merch designs are done by free-lance artists that come to us with their stuff.
DR: Who’s been one of the best characters you’ve encountered at a gig?
S: Dennis Rodman happens to be a Supervillains fan. When we played in Ft Lauderdale a few months back, D-Rod came out and hung out with us for a while before the show and stayed on-stage for most of the set -periodically grabbing my mic to sing and tell the crowd about the dangers of drinking and driving. Ironically, after the set the driver of his SUV flipped it off an on-ramp 3 times…yet the Worm remained unscathed!

DR: What’s been the funniest thing you’ve seen go down in the crowd during a set?
S: There is one guy in Gainesville that let our merch guy hock a loogey into his mouth onstage for a t-shirt.. The next time we rolled through, the same guy was in the crowd and yelled out “Skart, kick me in the balls!!”. He hopped onstage and we obliged him. It was pretty awesome and disturbing at the same time and the really bad part was he threw up all over the stage and it stunk like puke for the rest of our work-day. Gross.
DR: What city has the best looking girls?
S: Florida, Texas, and California have the most smokin’ hot chicks per capita. We aren’t really creepy enough to devise tactics to go out there and try to pick up chicks. We have found out that the better we play, the more likely we are to score so it’s a great reward system. X’s on the hands usually indicate that somebody’s roadie obviously has not been doing his damn job as doorman.
DR: What are necessary cartoons to have on the tour bus?
S: Definitely plenty of South Park and Family Guy, as well as Metalocalyse. We are definitely comedy fans, in no particular order: Trailor Park Boys, Little Britain, Tosh.0, Always Sunny..
DR: What’s your favorite memory of Shaq circa 1992?
S: Shaq breaking the backboard in ’92 was pretty much his arrival. Dwight is way more devastating, though.. those backboards have been way more reinforced since then or D-12 would shatter 5 a game!
DR: When you guys were all in high-school we’re you bro’s, stoners, nerds, punks, or what?
S: Dom and I were both in the band program. You could say we were band dorks because we were all about it, but we were far from dorks! We were really into the music and performance aspect. We would get yelled at by the band director for playing riffs in between songs in jazz band. We got suspended from school for drinking on band field trips. We would walk over to other drum-lines at football games and challenge them to drum-offs. We were banging chicks. We’d come to band practice high, and play for hours. I was surfing a whole bunch at the time. I guess we were kinda equal parts bros, stoner, nerd, punk, etc. Not alot has changed, now that I think about it.
DR: What was your worst day job?
S: Strangely enough, I’ve pretty much liked everywhere I’ve ever worked. I was a lifeguard for a few years which was amazing. I also worked at the Olive Garden for many years, but I made great cash and it was fun, so I had no complaints – plus, I just worked days so I had every night open to play in the band and they were cool with me leaving all the time. The whole time I was in high school, I worked at a serpentarium where they would do daily venom extractions from poisonous snakes. I got to clean all of their cages and re-stock the snakes as well as kill all of their prey (rats, rabbits) because we didn’t do live feeding. I got to scouring the highways for fresh road kill to feed to the gators and watch for my life while I cleaned their exhibit, usually with the gators and myself in it at the same time.
